Once you've downloaded it, you must install it. You do this the first time you need it and then it should be on your computer.
1) Insert your floppy disk or zip disk containing the files you wish to upload into the computer's A or D drive.
2)
CTC Instructions
Click on the "Start" button, then select "Programs," then select "DM Classes", then select our class #, then select "WS_FTP95".
SLV or at home Instructions
Click on the "Start" button, then select "Programs," then select "Graphics" then select "WS_FTP LE," then select "WS_FTP."
3) (Note: Students at the CTC must now select the "Firewall" tab and check "use firewall")--also,
if you cannot connect from the lab, you might want to find the setting to "use passive transfer mode"
and check that box (sometimes you need it and sometimes you don't).
Now, select the "General" tab if it is not already selected.
4) Click "New" to set up a new profile for the first time (this only needs to be done once at home, or at the CTC lab, once each time you sit at a new computer).
5) Use the following settings:
| Profile Name: | DM 160this is just what you are calling this connection | |
| Host Name/Address: | ftp.meyerconsult.com | |
| Host Type: | Automatic Detect | |
| User ID: | ftpusername (given to you by the instructor) | |
| Password: | ftppassword (given to you by the instructor) | |
| Account: | (leave blank) |
If you're in the classroom at SLV don't put a check in the "Save password" checkbox. If you are working from home or from the CTC lab it is okay to put a check in the save password box. At home it will then always remember your password. In the CTC lab, it will remember it for the time that you are sitting at that computer.
6) Select the "Startup" tab.
7) In the "Initial Remote Host Directory" box, do not enter anything.
8) In the "Initial Local Directory" box, enter "a:" if you are using a floppy, or, give it the path to the zip disk where you are storing your files for the class.
9) Click "OK" to connect. (If it asks for a password here, enter it.)
10) Now you'll see a window showing the contents of your local disk on the left, and the contents of your remote wpd directory on the right. Like this:
11)To select the file you wish to upload, click on it. The first file you should upload is your home page (called "index.html"), so click on "index.html".
12) If you are uploading a text file, like a .html web page, then make sure that the "ASCII" radio button is selected. For non-text files, like graphics (.jpg or .gif), you would select the "Binary" button instead.
Note: while "automatic," should work, it quite often doesn't. I don't recommend using automatic mode--always select the type of file you are transfering first.
13) To upload the file, select the file on the left that you want to publish. The example below shows someone publishing their page called index.html from their floppy. Click on the arrow button in the middle of the window that points from left to right to take the file from the left side (your floppy) and publish it on the right side (your wpd space).
14) After a few moments you'll see your file appear on the right.
15) You have succesfully uploaded your file! You can now continue to upload more files, like the graphic file that you have made a part of your index.html file. Remember to switch to binary mode before publishing that file.
16) When you are ready to view your page in Netscape, launch Netscape and go to the URL:
http://www.meyerconsult.com/student/wpd??/
to view your home page (replace wpd?? with the ftpusername you were assigned by the instructor.)
or go to:
http://www.meyerconsult.com/student/wpd??/graphicfilename.???
to see if your graphic file published (replace graphicfilename with the full file name of the graphic
you published, including the three letter .gif or .jpg extension and replace wpd?? with your wpd#.)
remember: use all lower case file names!!!! Unix is case sensitive and does not allow spaces in file names either.
