Overview of the Internet

The Internet is a network of networks, all agreeing to speak to each other in a common language (protocol). Each network consists of many individual computers, called hosts or nodes, connected together with some sort of cables to form a network. Each host might handle one or more type of activity, or application. The most well known applications that run on the Internet are:

  • E-mail
  • World Wide Web (WWW)
  • Other parts of the Internet:
    • File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
    • Usenet Newsgroups
    • Internet Relay Chat (IRC)

New applications for use over the Internet are being developed all the time. This list is just a small sampling of the types of applications that the Internet currently has on offer.
