How does the computer connect to the Internet from home?

  1. You tell launch either dialup networking (PC) or ARA (Mac) and click on the connect button.

Note: If you hear your modem try and dial, and instead of hearing a dial tone, you hear a messages saying "all circuits are busy" this means that too many people are using the phone in your neighborhood. This message is from Pacific Bell (or your local phone provider) and just means that all of their lines are in use at the moment.

  2. Your computer's PPP software dials the modem telling it to call your ISP, which gave you their phone number at the time you signed up. You might have had to type into your settings the first time you dialed up the ISP. Please note: you are responsible for making sure that the call from your house to the ISP's number is a local call.

  3. Once it says you are connected, then you launch your web browser or e-mail program depending on whether you want to surf the World Wide Web or check your e-mail.
