Remember to "save a copy" or "keep a copy" of your final e-mails in your sent folder, or keep a copy by some other means so that if I don't receive it, you'll have proof you sent it.

Please use full sentences to answer the questions. If the question says "What is your name?" then your answer should be a sentence starting with "My name is . . ."

Please number each answer, and start each answer on a new line.

Students may work together to find the answers but each student must type up and send their own e-mail, using their own words. If two or more students submit exactly the same answers, neither student will receive credit for that portion of the final, nor will they be able to submit corrections. If you work with another student, please say so in your e-mail.

Please send answers to all five questions at once in the same e-mail. Please send a separate e-mail for each set of five questions.

When you are writing URLS, please write the entire URL including the http:// at the beginning

Using FTP/E-mail Lists/Newsgroups

In this part of the final you are demonstrating your ability to use other parts of the internet such as E-mail Lists, Newsgroups, and FTP.

  1. If you found a .pdf PDF format document on the web, what software would you need in order to view it? What is the URL of a place where you can download that software? Hint: use the link to every file format in the world.

  2. How many jobs does the newsgroup ba.jobs.offered have posted in it? Which day did you look? What is the URL where you found the answer?

  3. Pretend some friends have recently moved and you inherited their collection of tropical fish (and you know nothing about tropical fish). Is there a mailing list that you could join which deals with tropical fish? What is the name of the e-mail list? What is the URL or E-mail address needed in order to join the list?

Web terminology

  1. What is the difference between a web page, a home page, and a web site? What is the URL where you found the answer?

FTP/Attachments

  1. Download a small .gif or .jpg picture of a butterfly (or other insect) from a freeware clip art site, or some other online source where they allow you to download graphics for free. The graphic should be under 50K in size. Send me the graphic as an attachment to this e-mail message. Include the URL of the page where you downloaded the butterfly graphic. NOTE: see the handout on this for how to download and also the handout for how to attach a graphic. Reminder: Do not click on "Save Draft" when you are done with this message -- Yahoo will delete any attachments. Just click on "Send."

To get credit, please note for questions asking for a URL: You must fully write out each URL, including the http:// when you send me your answers.
