CIS160/BOST160 Homework Questions 26 to 30

Due: Week 10---(same week as H5)

Please send answers via e-mail
Send the email to:
homework@meyerconsult.com
In the subject of the message put this:
H6: Your lastname, Your firstname (replace Lastname and Firstname with your name).

Remember to "save a copy" or "keep a copy" of your final e-mails in your sent folder, or keep a copy by some other means so that if I don't receive it, you'll have proof you sent it.

Please use full sentences to answer the questions. If the question says "What is your name?" then your answer should be a sentence starting with "My name is . . ."

Please number each answer, and start each answer on a new line.

Students may work together to find the answers but each student must type up and send their own e-mail, using their own words. If two or more students submit exactly the same answers, neither student will receive credit for that portion of the final, nor will they be able to submit corrections. If you work with another student, please say so in your e-mail.

Please send answers to all five questions at once. Please send a separate e-mail for each set of five questions.

Do not send the answers as an attachment.

For all answers which require a URL, include the full URL, starting with http:// in order for me to grade it.

H6: Questions 26 to 30

Finding business information

With these questions, you are demonstrating your ability to answer questions about business use of the Internet.

  1. If a business wanted to register the domain name mary.com, is it available? If not who owns the name? Please note: the owner of the domain name is the registrant, and you check if a domain name is available with a registrar. A good place to start is the handout on getting a domain name provided in the lecture notes.

  2. Pretend you have relatives or friends living in Rapid City, South Dakota and you wanted to get them a gift certificate to a store. Which of the following stores are in their area? Please tell me all of the stores that are available.

    • K-Mart
    • Target
    • Cost Plus
    • WalMart

How did you find this information? There is more than one way to find this same information.

  3. Find a URL for a locally owned business (not a national chain). How did you find it? What is the business name/focus.

Evaluate the quality of this local web site. Give me a sentence or two telling me:

    • Was the site easy/hard to navigate?
    • What kind of information did the site provide?
    • Was the site fast/slow to load?
    • Did the site offer a secure server where you could buy products?
    • What would you do differently to the site to make it better?

  4. Find ANOTHER URL for a locally owned business (not a national chain).

  5. How many different businesses are located at 903 Pacific in downtown Santa Cruz? Hint: Use the Santa Cruz Business License Search Database and "search by address." Do not put in the "Ave." part of Pacific Avenue. Just put in Pacific into the street name box.

To get credit, please note: You must fully write out each URL, including the http:// when you send me your answers.
