CIS160/BOST160 Homework Questions 16 to 20

Due: Week 9

Please send answers via e-mail
Send the email to:
homework@meyerconsult.com
In the subject of the message put this:
H4: Your lastname, Your firstname (replace Lastname and Firstname with your name).

Remember to "save a copy" or "keep a copy" of your final e-mails in your sent folder, or keep a copy by some other means so that if I don't receive it, you'll have proof you sent it.

Please use full sentences to answer the questions. If the question says "What is your name?" then your answer should be a sentence starting with "My name is . . ."

Please number each answer, and start each answer on a new line.

Students may work together to find the answers but each student must type up and send their own e-mail, using their own words. If two or more students submit exactly the same answers, neither student will receive credit for that portion of the final, nor will they be able to submit corrections. If you work with another student, please say so in your e-mail.

Please send answers to all five questions at once. Please send a separate e-mail for each set of five questions.

Do not send the answers as an attachment.

For all answers which require a URL, include the full URL, starting with http:// in order for me to grade it.

Finding official information (continued)

You are demonstrating your ability to search for web sites whose address you do not know, to evaluate those web sites to see whether they are official or not, and to accurately write the URL of those sites once you find them.

  1. What is the URL for the House of Representatives? (Federal Government). Note: once you've found their web site, also use their search form to find your representative. Give me the URL for your representative as well. You'll need to know is your zip code. If it is 95060 you'll need to look up your nine digit zip code first.

  2. What does the word acrid mean? What is the URL of the online dictionary where you found this definition?

  3. Pick an appliance or small power tool from your house (your refrigerator, a drill, a toaster). What appliance did you choose? Can you find a web site for the manufacturer? What is the URL? Do they offer replacement parts on their web site?

  4. How many eggs does a penguin typically lay? An online encyclopedia is a good place to look for this type of information. Not all online encylopedias will have this answer, but you should be able to find this answer on several of the many free online encyclopedias. Note: Your URL should not have aol.com in it--that encylcopedia is only open to aol.com customers. I need your answer to come from a free encyclopedia that anyone can access. Please give me the URL that will take me directly to the answer.<Extra Credit (worth 2 points): Review 3-4 online encyclopedias using this search as an example, giving the URLs for each encylopedia's answer and a review with your opinion of the quality of the information to be found on penguins from that encyclopedia.

  5. What is the cheapest home or apartment or duplex currently for rent in your neighborhood or nearby? The Santa Cruz Sentinel classifieds (Rentals section) are a good place to check. Also tell me the URL for the Santa Cruz Sentinel--the main page of their web site, not the classifieds themselves.

To get credit, please note: You must fully write out each URL, including the http:// when you send me your answers.
