Please use full sentences to answer the questions. If the question says "What is your name?" then your answer should be a sentence starting with "My name is . . ."

Please number each answer, and start each answer on a new line.

Students may work together to find the answers but each student must type up and send their own e-mail, using their own words. If two or more students submit exactly the same answers, neither student will receive credit for that portion of the final, nor will they be able to submit corrections. If you work with another student, please say so in your e-mail.

H2: Questions 6 through 10

Finding information at specific web sites

In this part of the final you are demonstrating your ability to navigate through web sites with very different designs and find information that is located within those sites.

  1. What is the size of a recent earthquake in the Santa Cruz Area? Tell me what time you looked and where the earthquake was located too. Hint: The USGS quake site at http://quake.usgs.gov/ is a good place to look.

  2. Find the nine digit zip code for 1505 Soquel Dr. in Santa Cruz (my dentist, in case you were wondering). Hint: the US Post Office web site ( http://www.usps.gov/ ) has a "zip + four" finder (use the first nine-digit zip listed for the whole building -- my dentist is not listed separately).

  3. What is the name and the airport code for the closest airport to Ashland, Oregon? (hint: it is about 15 miles away) Hint: use the Internet Travel Network at American Express/Internet Travel Network ( click on "Air Car & Hotel Reservations") to look up the answer. Under the "Speedy Flight Search" area put "San Jose, CA" in the FROM box, and "Ashland, OR" in the TO box. This should bring up a menu which tells you that Ashland has no airport, and gives a list of the closest airports.

  4. The San Jose Mercury news offers a great feature allowing you to search their job classified ads by keyword. To search for jobs, go to http://www.mercurycenter.com/products/careerpath/ and use the "Detailed Local Job Search" link. In the form that comes up, select one of the categories on the left, for example clerical and Silicon Valley on the right. Down in the box that says "Keywords to search for" type in Internet and hit the search button. Which category did you choose? How many jobs are there in that category which contain Internet in their descriptions? What day did you look? Also note: if you want to see the rest of the San Jose Mecury News online, that address is http://www.sjmercury.com/.

  5. If you wanted to send e-mail to the President, what is his e-mail address? One place to try and find this info is at http://www.whitehouse.gov/ (there is an e-mail address listed so don't give up). Do you think he personally reads all e-mails sent to him?
