Who is Deana Meyer?
Bio Spring 2000

Back to class info

My name is Deana Meyer (pronounced   Deena) and I started using the Internet in 1987 when I got my first e-mail account in college as an undergraduate in the Linguistics program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). I began working in the Internet Industry as of 1994, and have been watching the Internet grow like crazy ever since.

My first job in the Internet Industry was with ClariNet Communications, as an assistant editor working the very early morning shift. I telecommuted to my job via the Internet and then sorted Reuters and AP newsfeed articles into Usenet newsgroup categories based on their content.

Shortly afterward I moved back to the city where I'd gone to college, Santa Cruz, California, and became the first employee of Cruzio, a local Internet Service Provider. For the next four years I helped the company grow from 500 customers to 6,500. As the first employee, I did a bit of everything: new account sales, technical support, senior technical support, programming the company's voicemail system, teaching Internet classes, and designing our billing system.

In December 1998 I left my job at Cruzio and then in January 1999 began teaching as an Adjunct Faculty member at Cabrillo Community College in Aptos, CA.

In January 2000, I became the coordinator for the Links program at Cabrillo. This semester I am teaching five "Intro to the Internet and World Wide Web" sections, and one "Web Page Design Using HTML" section. This is my sixth semester teaching and I still love every minute of it!
